Open Die Forging

Open die forging involves shaping heated metal parts between a top die attached to a ram and a bottom die attached to a hammer, anvil, or bolster.

Metal parts are worked at appropriate temperatures and gradually formed into the desired configuration through controlled hammering or pressing of the workpiece.

Closed Die Forging

Closed die forging is a process in which dies move towards each other and cover the workpiece in whole or in part.

The heated raw material is placed in the bottom die. The forging shape is incorporated in one or both dies as a negative image, and compressive force forms the material into its final shape.
